10 Amazing Sites for Free Stock Images
We’ve all heard the phrase “content is king” when it comes to building an online presence, but when it comes to facilitating engagement and web design – images are equally important.
Whether I’m working on a personal project or developing unique content for my clients, I like to use images that are eye-catching and compelling.
How often do you visit a business’ website and notice the use of tacky, boring stock photos?
Not only are many of the images provided by stock photo sites uninspiring, the plans provided can also be pretty inconvenient. Member subscriptions from sites like Shutterstock and iStock can get expensive. Additionally, many subscription plans only give users a limited number of photos to download each month.
The good news is there are a number of great websites, with striking photos for use. They’re completely free to download, too!
These photos are either free from copyright restrictions or licensed under creative commons public domain dedication. In other words – feel free to download, copy, adjust and/or distribute photos from the following 10 sites to your heart’s content (pun intended)!
1. Pexels
Pexels definitely is my favorite site for free images! It functions like a search engine site that compiles high-quality stock photo websites. This site is great to use for any type of photo as well, be it food, landscapes, commercial products or business.
2. KaboomPics
Kaboom Pics describes itself as a “visual explosion”, and it’s true. This site is my go-to for colorful, vibrant images. It’s also easy to navigate, allowing you to search for photos by color and orientation.
3. Pixabay
Pixabay is another free stock image site that functions as a search engine. It houses over a million free images, illustrations and videos.
4. FoodiesFeed
Looking for awesome photos to accompany your recipes? FoodiesFeed has you covered!
5. StockSnap
StockSnap has a variety of high-quality images for use, uploaded on a daily basis. I also find this site convenient because it displays the number of views and downloads on each image, allowing you to easily find the most popular photos available.
6. Unsplash
Unsplash is a reliable source for high-res, free stock images provided by photographers.
7. Gratisography
A talented photographer named Ryan McGuire shoots all of the photos on Gratisography, which are free of copyright restrictions. He updates the site weekly with beautiful imagery. I find this site is great for use on commercial projects and social media campaigns.
8. Burst
Burst is a product of Shopify and provides great free stock photos for entrepreneurs and small business owners.
9. Life of Pix
Life of Pix is a product of the LEEROY creative agency, offering free high-resolution photos and videos with no copyright restrictions. I find this site great to use for Instagram, as many images are attention-grabbing.
10. ISO Republic
ISO Republic is the perfect stock image site for creative professionals. Updated daily, each of the site’s 3,000+ images are also unique to industries such as tech, textiles and architecture.
